• Research and development laboratories.
• Training center for technical customer seminars.
• Service center equipped with remote telediagnostic capabilities.
• Customer and technology centers for consultations and demonstrations.
• Total of 501,542 square feet in Farmington, CT, Plymouth Hills, MI, Fremont, CA, Charleston, SC, and Cranbury, NJ.

Research and Development
Committed to maintaining a leadership role in providing quality, state-of-the-art technology to customers, TRUMPF Inc. invests heavily in research and development – with more than $11.7 million spent in R&D in 2002 and even more in 2003. Research laboratories, located in Farmington, Conn., Plymouth, Mich. and Cranbury, New Jersey, employ approximately 50 people.

Committed to North America
Today, in a time when companies are moving manufacturing to locations with cheaper land, cheaper taxes and cheaper labor, TRUMPF is staying put. In fact, TRUMPF employees in the United States recently developed two new machines to be produced here.

“The promise of cheap is not persuasive when you manufacture high-quality, precision machinery,” says Peter Leibinger, chairman of the supervisory board of TRUMPF Inc. “The lasers and machine tools we produce here in the United States are of the highest caliber.”

Connecticut is well known for its highly skilled and well-educated workforce. Adds Peter Leibinger, “The can-do spirit of Yankee resourcefulness and creativity lives on even today.”

That resourcefulness comes in handy, particularly when companies face difficult choices. When the going gets tough, those that stay put must get tough. Instead of moving, TRUMPF has found other ways to remain profitable and competitive.

Made (Lean) in the USA
Over the last decade, TRUMPF has invested significantly in its lean manufacturing method called SYNCHRO. The result of adopting advanced manufacturing techniques combined with sound business decisions and cost-savings measures: TRUMPF Inc. now manufactures more efficiently than ever.

This efficiency is reflected in the punching and laser machines designed and produced by TRUMPF in Farmington for the US and international markets. US-made punching machines – the TC 2010 R and TC 2020 R FMC compact – combine classic TRUMPF technology with the speed and flexibility required by American “just in time” environments.

Laser cutting machines, such as the TC L 2530 Plus, offer clever design solutions that increase production without added overhead. Approximately half of the laser machines produced in the United States are exported worldwide. However, the revenue generated here stays here.

Between six and eight percent of sales are reinvested in research and development. A new R&D lab was recently added in Farmington to create new, advanced lasers and machines. The facility also features a clean room, where CO2 and solid-state lasers are manufactured. More than eighty percent of our laser parts are produced here as well.

Developing Ways to Serve Future Needs
When your customers want it yesterday, performing manufacturing and R&D in the same location is critical. The advantages show up in both product quality and service.

When manufacturing, R&D, sales and service are close enough for regular communication, improvement results in all areas. For example, engineers can better design features that customers say they need. Research and development timetables are accelerated too when manufacturing is near by.

Communicating with customers is also essential. Every month, more than thirty companies visit Farmington to meet with specialists and discuss their needs and the applications of each machine. Such one-on-one meetings often result in customer-tailored solutions not just for today, but for the future as well.
